"Pat Steir: Self-Portrait: An Installation"
February 27 - April 12 1987
“They're not exactly self-portraits: am I looking only at myself? I'm not interested in myself anymore. I've already been through Freudian analysis. One thing it made me do was to look at things in a historical as well as personal context. A lot of things that seem personal are not. . . . I don't find the interpretation of one's own history as important as the fact that one is in a worldly context. In other words, one learns to see oneself contextually, to envision one's historical place, which is far from being an isolated persona.”
