Marwan Makki is currently assisting Danh Vo in research for his upcoming exhibition at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum. For the talk he will be relaying factual information concerning the restoration project undertaken between 1982-1986. Other related factual matters that may possibly pertain in direct and indirect ways to the upcoming Fridericianum exhibition will also be discussed.
Propositions is a public forum that explores ideas in development. Each two-day seminar introduces a topic of current investigation in an invited speaker’s own artistic or intellectual practice. Over the course of a seminar session, these developing ideas are responded to, researched, and discussed to propel them forward in unique ways. This month’s Proposition is by Danh Vo.
The structure of Propositions is as follows: Friday, 7:00 PM - Initial proposition and lecture Saturday, 2:00 PM - Guest speaker responds, followed by discussion with audience
Danh Vo’s conceptual practice exists in both tangible and intangible forms. As an artist concerned not only with cultural identity, but categorization in general, Vo’s practice varies from a project of marrying and divorcing in order to add names onto his, to incorporating the grave marker of his grandmother on which her Vietnamese name is spelled in Latin letters on a crucifix. Lately, the artist has delved deep into the notion of appropriation, combining his experiences with others.
Danh Vo graduated from The Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen in 2004. Recent exhibitions include: About Us, Berlin (2010); Strange Comfort (Afforded by the Profession), Kunsthalle Basel, Basel (2010); Educando el Saber- Musac, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León, (2010); Danh Vo – Where the Lions Are, Kunsthalle Basel, Basel (2009); and Les Fleus d'Interieur, Kadist Art Foundation, Paris (2009). In 2007 he was awarded the prestigious blueOrange Prize.
